Contingency planningLesson 118 of 136

Contingency planning

A resilient import business identifies backup suppliers for critical products before it needs them, not during a crisis; considers alternative shipping routes or ports when its usual one is congested or disrupted; and holds some emergency buffer stock for products where being out of stock would be especially costly to the business. None of this needs to be elaborate for a small importer, but even a simple written contingency note, 'if supplier A fails, contact supplier B; if Douala is congested, ask the agent about Kribi,' saves valuable time exactly when you are least able to think clearly.
